It's beyond me how a sniveling, conniving person like Peter Pettigrew was even a friend of the Potters, let alone being their Secret Keeper. James saw this person up close for seven years at least. I think that's enough time to be able to judge a person's personality.

They were essentially good people, and they trusted him because they thought that, since they would die for him, he would die for them. Trust blinds you to things, especially things in people close to you. James had been good friends with him for years: I don't think it occurred to him to not trust him.

It is hard to believe that someone you love and trust could betray you. But I guess not everyone returns that love and trust. Seems life and friends are just a toss of the dice sometimes.

Remember what Lupin said... James would have considered it the height of dishonor to distrust his friends...

but it makes me wonder how close were they really to peter he seamed like the loner of the group. and sometimes people just change. maybe he felt like he got a better offer from voldemort, not like any offer from him is good, and felt more a part of something on top of being obviously petrifyed of voldemort lol.

I think it was the length of time, when you're friends with someone for that long, you take it for granted that they might not change. You just know them so well, or in this case you believe you do.And you think 7 years must be a long time to make an unbreakable bond. James trusted him, no matter that he was the weak one out, he was part of their group... My only question is, it was obvious enough that he was the weak one out, so why would you make him the Keeper of the keys. if you think about it, his will would be the easiest to be broken, make sense out of the equation and pick someone whose stronger. Well, the thinking behind it was that Voldemort was going to go for Sirius, because Siriuis is the most logical choice. Pettigrew is the least logical choice, so it make sense to choose him precisely because he is the weakest. Had he not been a death eater, Voldemort would never have guessed Peter.

Quite a good point there Hermie, but in the end Voldy would have hunted them all down, if Sirius didn't have the information he seeked, he'd have moved to Lupin and so on and so forth...but alas Pettigrew was a sniveling sell out.
